Plastic is probably in every corner of your home, office and life. From the bag lining the trash bin to the containers keeping your food safe; the bottle of water you are drinking, the straw you are sipping your cocktail from, the hooks holding your bathroom towel and so on and so forth.
You may ask why going plastic-free as soon as possible is so important. Well, it is not farfetched to say that plastic is slowly taking over the world. It is slowly decomposing, or no decomposing material and is contributing to pollution like nothing else. It is a convenient material, but you needn’t forget that the needs of the environment should come first. That is, after all, the only way to live on this planet.
If you want to do your due, you need to start today. Replacing just a few of the everyday plastic items you use in your life. There are some eco-friendly alternatives, such as:
1. Glass/stainless steel water bottles
The next time you reach for the plastic water bottle from the market, think about the millions like it that end up polluting the ocean and going on landfills. Wouldn’t it be better to have a single, multi-use bottle for the task? A glass or a stainless steel one is much better since you will be able to use it more than once. Not only that, but you will be able to pick one that looks much better than a mere plastic bottle.
2. Bamboo toothbrush
If you don’t believe that plastic is taking over our lives, consider this: it is more than likely that you are starting your day off with a plastic material – the toothbrush. Replacing one of these every few months can be environmentally-taxing, so consider switching to bamboo toothbrushes. Bamboo is 100% biodegradable and doesn’t have any drawbacks to plastic, so it’s really a no-brainer.
3. Cloth diapers
There is really no way to mention plastic hygiene items without first talking about diapers. Disposable diapers are clogging the landfills, and it is really a problem contributing to quite a lot of pollution. Instead, you should switch to cloth diapers. They are not just reusable, but are also much better for the baby, as they lack chemicals.
4. Coffee cups
If you are a coffee junkie, then this one is right up your alley. Instead of going for a few plastic cups, you can go with a more practical coffee tumbler. While it is true that such an item often has a plastic lid or sleeve, it is much more preferable to a number of plastic cups, tons of which are thrown daily.
5. Shopping bags
This one is somewhat of a no-brainer, but it bears mention: plastic bags. These are literally everywhere. Perhaps not a day goes by without you coming across a few of them on the street. And why are people so obsessed with plastic bags, when there are much better alternatives out there? A multi-use shopping bag is not only stronger but also more convenient. You can get a few of them, and you will hardly ever need plastic bags when going to the store.
6. Reusable straws
Do you really need plastic straws? Can’t you just use one more sophisticated device – your mouth – to drink from a cup? If you absolutely need a straw, why not go for a multi-use one? A stainless steel one is easily washable and reusable.
As you can see, there are quite a few everyday plastic items you can replace. The alternatives are much better and more environmentally-friendly.
